Key Verse: Exodus 24:7"Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.’"
This is a defining moment.
God has given His laws, and now Israel must choose. Will they follow Him? Will they commit to living as His people?
The people answer with confidence: “We will do all that the Lord has spoken.” They pledge their obedience, sealing the covenant between God and Israel.
A Blood Covenant
Moses writes down all of God’s words, builds an altar, and offers sacrifices. Then, he sprinkles the blood on the people.
"Behold, the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words." (Exodus 24:8)
Blood was a symbol of commitment and cleansing. This covenant is not just words—it is sealed with sacrifice.
This moment foreshadows Jesus. At the Last Supper, He lifted the cup and said:
"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:28)
Israel’s covenant was sealed with the blood of animals. Our covenant with God is sealed with the blood of Jesus.
A Glimpse of God's Glory
Then, something incredible happens.
Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders go up the mountain—and they see God.
"They saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness." (Exodus 24:10)
God allows them a glimpse of His glory, and they eat and drink in His presence.
This is not just law—it is relationship. God is calling His people into communion with Him.
Moses Goes Higher
God then calls Moses even higher up the mountain. For forty days and forty nights, Moses will be in God’s presence, receiving the law and the tablets of stone.
But down below, Israel’s faith will soon be tested.
A Lesson for Us
This chapter reminds us that God doesn’t just call us to rules—He calls us to relationship.
Commitment matters. Israel said, “We will obey,” but would they? Have we truly committed to follow God?
The blood of the covenant matters. Israel’s covenant was sealed with blood—ours is sealed with Jesus’ sacrifice. Are we living in the power of that grace?
God’s presence matters. Moses went higher. The elders saw His glory. Are we drawing closer to Him?
God calls us not just to obedience—but to Himself. Are we willing to go higher?
