Exodus 39: The Priestly Garments

Key Verse: Exodus 39:30"And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription, like the engraving of a signet, ‘Holy to the Lord.’"

The work on the Tabernacle is almost complete.

Now, the garments for the priests are made—clothing designed for holiness, beauty, and service to God. These garments set them apart, reminding Israel that the priests were mediators between God and His people.

The Ephod: Bearing the Names of Israel

The first piece crafted is the ephod, a richly woven vest made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn.

On the shoulders, two onyx stones are engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Every time the high priest enters God’s presence, he carries the names of the people on his shoulders. He does not stand before God for himself alone—he represents the whole nation.

The Breastpiece: A Heart for the People

Next, the breastpiece of judgment is created, a square piece attached to the ephod.

It is set with twelve precious stones, each engraved with the name of a tribe of Israel.

The high priest doesn’t just carry Israel on his shoulders—he carries them on his heart.

Inside the breastpiece are placed the Urim and Thummim, mysterious objects used to discern God’s will. The priest’s role was not just to offer sacrifices but to seek God’s guidance for His people.

The Robe and the Golden Plate

The robe is woven entirely of blue, with pomegranates and golden bells along the hem.

The bells would ring as the high priest entered the Holy Place, a sign that he was alive and accepted before God.

Finally, the golden plate is made and placed on the high priest’s turban.

Engraved on it are the words: “Holy to the Lord.”

This is a reminder that the high priest is set apart for God. He does not serve by his own merit—he is chosen, purified, and consecrated for this sacred work.

Jesus: Our Great High Priest

  • The high priest carried Israel’s names—Jesus carries our names before the Father. (Hebrews 7:25)

  • The breastpiece showed love for the people—Jesus’ heart beats for us. (Romans 8:34)

  • The golden plate declared holiness—Jesus is our holiness, making us pure. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

A Lesson for Us

The high priest’s garments were not just clothing—they were a symbol of his calling.

  • Are we carrying others in prayer, as the high priest carried Israel?

  • Are we seeking God’s will, trusting Him to guide our steps?

  • Are we living as those who are “Holy to the Lord,” set apart for His purpose?

Through Jesus, we are now a royal priesthood. (1 Peter 2:9)

Are we walking in that calling?
