Exodus 2: The Birth of a Deliverer

Key Verse: Exodus 2:10"When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, ‘Because,’ she said, ‘I drew him out of the water.’"

God’s plan for deliverance often begins in the most unexpected ways. In the midst of Pharaoh’s decree to kill all Hebrew baby boys, one child is hidden—protected by the hands of a desperate yet faithful mother.

Moses’ mother places him in a basket and sets him afloat in the Nile. What should have been his place of death becomes the very means of his salvation. Pharaoh’s own daughter finds him, adopts him, and raises him in the palace.

This is how God works. He takes what the enemy meant for evil and turns it for good. Pharaoh wanted Hebrew boys to be drowned in the river, yet from that same river, God raises up the one who will deliver His people.

Moses grows up with both Hebrew roots and an Egyptian education. He is uniquely positioned for his calling, even though he doesn’t realize it yet. So often, we don’t see how God is preparing us in the middle of our ordinary lives. But nothing is wasted—every season, every struggle, every unexpected turn is part of God’s bigger plan.

Later in the chapter, Moses tries to step into his calling too soon. He sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and takes matters into his own hands, killing the Egyptian. But instead of being seen as a hero, he becomes a fugitive, fleeing to the wilderness.

Timing is everything. Moses had the heart for justice, but he wasn’t ready. God would take the next forty years to shape him in the quietness of the desert before sending him back as the deliverer of Israel.

Maybe you feel stuck in a waiting season, wondering if God has forgotten you. But just like Moses, your wilderness is preparation, not punishment. God is working in your waiting, and when the time is right, He will call you into what He has been preparing you for all along.
