Exodus 19: Preparing to Meet God

Key Verse: Exodus 19:5"Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine."

Three months after leaving Egypt, the Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai. This is where God will speak to them directly, making a covenant that will shape them into His chosen nation.

But before they can meet Him, they must prepare.

A Holy Calling

God tells Moses:

  • Remind the people what I have done. “You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.” (Exodus 19:4)

  • Call them to obedience. “If you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession.” (Exodus 19:5)

  • Prepare for My presence. “Consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and be ready for the third day.” (Exodus 19:10-11)

God is not just giving them rules—He is calling them into relationship.

The Mountain Trembles

On the third day, God descends on Mount Sinai in fire, smoke, thunder, and lightning. The whole mountain shakes. A loud trumpet blast sounds, growing louder and louder.

The people tremble.

God’s holiness is overwhelming. The Israelites, who had so easily complained and doubted, now stand in awe and fear.

Moses alone is called to go up the mountain. The people cannot come near. God is showing them His power, His holiness, and His authority.

A Lesson for Us

Israel had to prepare their hearts before meeting God. So do we.

  • God calls us to obedience, not just blessing. Being His people means living by His commands.

  • God’s presence is powerful. Do we approach Him with reverence, or have we made Him small in our eyes?

  • God invites us into relationship. Israel stood at a distance, but through Jesus, we can now draw near.

Are we truly preparing our hearts to meet with God? Or are we standing at a distance, afraid to surrender?
