Key Verse: Numbers 21:8
"And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.’"
Numbers 21 marks a shift in Israel’s journey. After decades of wandering, the people begin moving closer to the Promised Land. In this chapter, we see:
Victory over the Canaanites (Numbers 21:1-3).
The bronze serpent—God’s provision for healing (Numbers 21:4-9).
New victories and conquests (Numbers 21:10-35).
This chapter highlights an important truth: When we trust God and obey Him, we experience victory. When we doubt and complain, we bring trouble upon ourselves.
Victory Over the Canaanites: Trusting God in Battle
The Israelites faced an attack from the Canaanite king of Arad. Instead of complaining, they cried out to God for help. They made a vow:
“If You will give this people into our hand, we will devote their cities to destruction” (Numbers 21:2).
God heard them and gave them victory.
This was a moment of faith and obedience—unlike previous failures, Israel trusted God and saw Him fight for them.
When we turn to God instead of relying on ourselves, He brings victory.
God is faithful to those who depend on Him.
Trusting God in battle leads to breakthrough.
The Bronze Serpent: Healing Through Faith
Despite their victory, the Israelites quickly fell back into complaining:
“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?”
“There is no food and no water, and we hate this worthless manna!”
In response, God sent fiery serpents into the camp, and many were bitten and died. This was a direct consequence of their rebellious attitude and lack of gratitude.
Yet, in His mercy, God provided a way for healing:
He commanded Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole.
Anyone who looked at the bronze serpent would be healed.
This is one of the clearest foreshadowings of Christ in the Old Testament. Jesus later referred to it in John 3:14-15:
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life."
This teaches us that:
Sin brings consequences, but God provides salvation.
Healing comes not by our works but by looking to God in faith.
Jesus is the ultimate source of healing and salvation.
New Victories: Moving Toward the Promise
After this lesson in faith, Israel moved forward in victory:
They defeated King Sihon of the Amorites (Numbers 21:21-32).
They conquered King Og of Bashan (Numbers 21:33-35).
These victories signaled a new season—Israel was no longer wandering aimlessly but moving toward their inheritance.
This reminds us that:
Obedience leads to forward movement.
God’s promises are fulfilled in His timing.
When we trust Him, He brings victory.
Final Thought
Numbers 21 reveals key spiritual lessons:
Faith leads to victory, while complaining leads to suffering.
Healing and salvation come through faith, not human effort.
God is leading us toward His promises—when we trust Him, we move forward.
Are you looking to Jesus, the ultimate source of healing and salvation? No matter the struggles you face, fix your eyes on Him, and He will lead you to victory.
