Key Verse: Leviticus 16:30 "Because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins."
Leviticus 16 describes the most important day in Israel’s calendar—Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This was the one day each year when the high priest entered the Most Holy Place to make atonement for the entire nation. It was a day of deep humility, repentance, and renewal.
This chapter is central to the book of Leviticus and foreshadows the ultimate atonement found in Jesus Christ.
The Key Elements of the Day of Atonement
1. The High Priest’s Preparation
Aaron had to bathe and put on sacred garments before entering God’s presence. (Leviticus 16:4)
He offered a bull as a sin offering for himself and his family. (Leviticus 16:6)
2. The Two Goats: The Sin Offering and the Scapegoat
One goat was sacrificed – Its blood was sprinkled inside the Most Holy Place to make atonement for the people. (Leviticus 16:15-16)
The other goat, the scapegoat, was sent into the wilderness – The priest laid his hands on it, symbolically transferring Israel’s sins to the goat, which was then released into the desert. (Leviticus 16:20-22)
3. Entering the Most Holy Place
Only on this day could the high priest enter the Holy of Holies, carrying the blood of the sacrifice. (Leviticus 16:2, 14)
He burned incense so that a cloud covered the mercy seat, shielding him from God’s direct presence. (Leviticus 16:12-13)
4. Atonement for the People and the Tabernacle
The blood of the sacrifices cleansed both the people and the sanctuary from sin. (Leviticus 16:16-19)
The people fasted and humbled themselves, recognizing their need for forgiveness. (Leviticus 16:29-31)
Jesus: The Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement
Every part of the Day of Atonement pointed forward to Jesus, who became the ultimate sacrifice for sin.
Jesus is our High Priest – He did not need to offer sacrifices for Himself, because He was sinless. (Hebrews 7:26-27)
Jesus is the Sacrificial Lamb – His blood was shed to cleanse us from sin, just like the goat that was sacrificed. (Hebrews 9:12-14)
Jesus is our Scapegoat – He took our sins upon Himself and removed them completely. (Isaiah 53:6, 2 Corinthians 5:21)
The Temple Veil Was Torn – When Jesus died, the veil separating the Holy of Holies was torn in two, showing that through Him, we have direct access to God. (Matthew 27:51, Hebrews 10:19-20)
A Lesson for Us
Do we recognize our need for atonement and forgiveness?
Are we trusting in Jesus alone as our High Priest and perfect sacrifice?
Are we walking in the freedom of knowing our sins have been completely removed?
Leviticus 16 reminds us that sin is serious, but God’s grace is greater. Through Jesus, we no longer need an annual Day of Atonement—our sins are fully paid for, once and for all.
Are we living in the joy of His atonement today?
