Genesis 42: Joseph’s Brothers Come to Egypt – A Test of Character

Key Verse: Genesis 42:21

"Then they said to one another, ‘In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.’"

Genesis 42 is a powerful chapter where Joseph’s dreams begin to be fulfilled, and his brothers unknowingly come before him seeking food. This chapter highlights guilt, justice, and the beginning of reconciliation.

1. The Famine Forces Jacob’s Sons to Egypt

"When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, ‘Why do you look at one another? Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.’" (Genesis 42:1-2)

  • The famine is severe, and Jacob sends his sons to Egypt for food.

  • Benjamin stays behind because Jacob fears losing him (after losing Joseph).

Key Lesson:

  • Difficult times often force us to face past mistakes.

  • God can use famines (crises) to lead us to His plan.

2. Joseph Recognizes His Brothers, but They Do Not Recognize Him

"Now Joseph was governor over the land... and Joseph's brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground." (Genesis 42:6)

  • Joseph’s childhood dream is fulfilled—his brothers bow before him.

  • He recognizes them immediately, but they do not recognize him.

Instead of revealing himself, Joseph decides to test them.

Key Lesson:

  • God’s promises always come to pass, even if they take years.

  • Joseph must discern whether his brothers have changed before revealing his identity.

3. Joseph Tests His Brothers

"You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land." (Genesis 42:9)

  • Joseph accuses them of being spies, forcing them to defend themselves.

  • They reveal that they have another brother (Benjamin) back home.

  • Joseph keeps Simeon as a hostage and tells them to return with Benjamin to prove their honesty.

Key Lesson:

  • Testing reveals the true character of a person.

  • Joseph is not seeking revenge—he wants to see if his brothers have changed.

4. The Brothers’ Guilt Begins to Surface

"Then they said to one another, ‘In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.’" (Genesis 42:21)

  • The brothers begin to confess their guilt about selling Joseph.

  • Reuben reminds them that he tried to stop them years ago (Genesis 37:21-22).

  • Joseph understands everything they say but does not reveal himself.

Joseph turns away and weeps.

Key Lesson:

  • Guilt does not disappear over time—only repentance and forgiveness can remove it.

  • Joseph still loves his brothers despite what they did to him.

5. The Brothers Return Home with Grain and Fear

"At the lodging place one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder, and he saw his money in the mouth of his sack." (Genesis 42:27)

  • Joseph secretly returns their money, causing fear and confusion.

  • When they return to Jacob, they tell him everything.

  • Jacob refuses to send Benjamin because he fears losing him like Joseph.

Key Lesson:

  • Fear and guilt keep people in bondage.

  • Jacob’s lack of trust in God shows that his heart is still wounded.

Genesis 42 teaches us that:

  • God’s plan is always at work, even through trials.

  • Guilt cannot be ignored—it must be faced.

  • Forgiveness and reconciliation take time.

Joseph’s brothers do not yet realize that their past sins are leading them back to the brother they betrayed. But God is setting the stage for redemption.
