Genesis 13: Abram and Lot – Choosing by Faith, Not by Sight

Key Verse: Genesis 13:14-15

"The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, ‘Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.’"

Genesis 13 tells the story of a defining moment in the life of Abram. After answering God’s call to leave his homeland, Abram now faces a new challenge—conflict within his own family. His nephew Lot, who had journeyed with him from the beginning, had accumulated great wealth, just as Abram had. Their flocks, herds, and tents became so numerous that the land could no longer sustain them together.

A Test of Character

Tension arose between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen. There was quarreling over resources—water, pasture, and space. Rather than allowing division to grow, Abram took the initiative to bring peace. Though he was the elder and the one whom God had promised the land, Abram humbly gave Lot the first choice of where to settle.

Abram’s words reflect his maturity and trust in God: “Let there be no strife between you and me… Is not the whole land before you?” (Genesis 13:8-9). He was not concerned with securing the best land for himself. He trusted that God would provide, no matter what.

Lot’s Decision – Choosing by Sight, Not by Faith

Lot looked with his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well-watered, “like the garden of the Lord” (Genesis 13:10). From a worldly perspective, it seemed like the perfect place—fertile, abundant, and full of opportunity. Without seeking God, Lot chose the best land for himself. But this land was near Sodom, a city already known for its wickedness.

This choice marked the beginning of Lot’s spiritual downfall. He was drawn toward prosperity, but he did not consider the spiritual dangers of living near Sodom. What seemed like a good decision based on sight ultimately led to hardship and moral compromise.

God’s Promise to Abram

After Lot left, God spoke again to Abram. This time, He reaffirmed His promise: All the land that Abram could see—north, south, east, and west—would belong to his descendants forever. Though Lot chose the “better” land, Abram received the true blessing.

God told Abram to “walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you” (Genesis 13:17). This was an act of faith—even though Abram did not yet possess the land, he was to walk through it as if it already belonged to him.

Abram responded not with complaint or worry, but with worship. He moved his tent to Hebron and built another altar to the Lord. Every time God spoke, Abram responded with worship. He understood that God’s promises are greater than any earthly wealth or land.

Faith vs. Selfish Ambition

This chapter presents a contrast between two ways of making decisions.

  • Lot chose by sight. He prioritized worldly prosperity over spiritual security. His decision led him closer to sin and eventual ruin.

  • Abram chose by faith. He was willing to trust God’s promise, even if it meant giving up what seemed like the better option. And in the end, God rewarded him with far more than Lot could have ever gained on his own.

The Lesson for Us

How do we make decisions in life? Do we base them only on what looks best on the surface—career choices, relationships, financial opportunities—without considering God’s guidance? Or do we trust that God’s plan is always better, even when it requires patience and sacrifice?

Lot settled near Sodom because it looked appealing. But soon, he was living in Sodom, and later, he barely escaped with his life. What seemed like an easy choice led him into spiritual danger.

Abram, on the other hand, walked in faith, humility, and trust. He let Lot take the first choice, believing that God would take care of him no matter what. And God did.

The world tells us to grab what we can, to take opportunities before someone else does. But faith teaches us to trust God’s timing, to seek His will, and to choose spiritual well-being over short-term gain.

When we surrender our ambitions to God, He leads us to a place far better than we could ever choose for ourselves.
